These bamboo and cotton buds are totally plastic free and biodegradable.

To compost, cut each one into small pieces and add to your compost heap where they will break down in 4-6 months.

 

Do not flush down the toilet.

The traditional cotton bud was born in the USA in 1923 when Leo Gerstenzang saw his wife trying to clean their son's ear with wads of cotton wrapped around the end of a toothpick. After this eurika moment, his invention quickly caught on and the cotton bud (or Q-Tip) has become a common sight in bathrooms around the world.

 

And it's easy to see why they're so popular. Their small size means that they're perfect for cleaning hard-to-reach places, such as ears, or removing eye makeup. In the UK alone, it's estimted that we use some 2 million cotton buds a year.

 

Originally made of a wooden stem with a cotton bud at one end, over the years the wooden stem was replaced by plastic, making the humble cotton bud a major pollutant. Even worse, many cotton buds are flushed down the toilet and end up on beaches or in our waterways where they cause havoc for marine life and their habitats.

 

 

In a bid to cut this element of plastic pollution, governments in Scotland, England and Italy have already banned the sale of plastic cotton buds, with Wales and the EU set to follow suit in 2021.

 

However, while the High Street brands move away from cotton buds with plastic stems they are often still found in single-use plastic packaging.
